Well, since we can’t afford the pre-k thing right now, I’ve been inspired to be my own pre-k for Jonah and get Carly in on it too, by trying to be more structured throughout our day and having actual activities to do in mind, besides just “play with the toys in the playroom”. I know there will be days (maybe even more often than not) that we won’t follow the schedule to a T or get everything done, but I feel like this is a good jumping off point. I took the schedules of a local day care’s toddler class and combined it with their 3-year old class, then tweaked it to make it my own. Here’s what my preschool schedule looks like for my 1 year old and 3 year old:
8:00 Alarm/iphone poking or snooze
8:15 Wake-up/Devotional
8:30 Get Myself Dressed
8:45 Diaper/Potty/Get Kids Dressed
9:00 Make Breakfast/TV Time
9:15 Breakfast
9:45 Jonah’s Lesson Time
10:00 Carly’s Lesson Time
10:15 Diaper/Potty/Wash Hands
10:30 Morning Snack
10:45 Clean Up/Chores
11:00 Themed Activity (goes along with our weekly rotated toys’ theme)
11:15 Learning Activity (art, math, motor skills, social skills, etc)
11:30 Outside/Exercise
11:50 Music Time
12:00 Free Play/Make Lunch
12:15 Diaper/Potty/Wash Hands
12:30 Lunch
12:45 Clean Up/Story Time
1:00 Quiet Time
2:45 Diaper/Potty/Wash Hands
3:00 Afternoon Snack
3:15 One on One Jonah Time
3:30 One on One Carly Time
3:45 Centers/Free Play
4:45 Clean Up/Chores
5:00 Outside/Exercise
5:30 Daddy Time/Make Dinner
5:50 Potty/Hand Wash
6:00 Dinner
6:20 Family Time/Bath
6:40 PJs/Teeth/Clean Up/Watch Curious George
7:15 Story Time
7:30 Lights Out/Chores
8:00 Unwind Time
11:00 Get ready for bed
12:00 Feed Carly/Potty Jonah/Sleep
We sort of started following the schedule this weekend, but tomorrow morning is my real starting point. That thing I said about it being “off” more days than not, yeah… that’s definitely this week. Tomorrow we’ll mess it up with a trip to the library, Tuesday we’ll mess it up with going to get groceries and going to a PJ Puppet Show, Wednesday we’re hosting playgroup and I’ve signed up for listening to a photography webinar… Thursday and Friday look to be “normal” though!
hehe
Update (after about a month):
We have definitely had to tweak the schedule even further, to make it really work for us. The main thing that I try to keep consistent is the 1-3 quiet time. We are in and out and all over the place more days than not, so a lot of the activities fall through the cracks. The kids are really loving the one on one time, so we make sure to do that at least once a day too.
I thought while I was here posting an update, I’d also add a couple of the resources I use to find great activities for the kids. The original schedule layout was from Kiddie Academy. They have a different schedule for each age level, so mine is a combination of the 1 & 3 year old classes. I get a lot of craft ideas and book recommendations from both No Time for Flash Cards and from Letter of the Week. They both make it easy to produce a cohesive themed unit with crafts, stories, songs, and games.
